The girls of youngest Onondaga are really hitting the point of lit-up
faces and being fully settled into their first year of camp. During
the younger village program tonight, 01 built forts, ran and attacked
like champions. They came back to their bunk at the end of the night
with war paint on their faces and stories of their strategies and
fort-building skills.
In the dining hall, 01 cheers as loud as the older girls and are
proud to have mastered the long Onondaga cheer sequence. Some girls
who were initially more reserved are the most animated during these
cheers.
Earlier in the week, we had our first village night. We started out by
painting a bunk flag to hang in our cabin. Naturally, this was
followed by a paint war, which was unanimously declared the highlight
of the girls' day. Once everyone had been painted, the girls did some
early triathlon training in the form of a run down the S trail to the
waterfront. They washed off in the lake just in time for Havdallah and
a campfire (and then real showers back at the cabin. Don't worry, they
did get clean.)
Stay tuned as the youngest girls become newcomb superstars, stong
swimmers, birkat leaders and boondoggle experts.
