Yesterday was Mohawk day. This means that the village of Mohawk left camp for a special day out filled with different exciting events. We started off the day with a village sleep in that lasted till 9:15 when the kids woke up to the sweet smell of freshly baked cino-buns in the village. After each camper was filled to the brim and their fingers were sticky like glue, they gathered everything they needed for the day. After they finished packing, we loaded up the bus and headed for our first stop.
Pulling in to the movie theater the campers eyes lit up as they saw the big sign that said Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. When entering the theater each camper was given a complimentary popcorn and soda then shown to their seats. The campers chatted in anticipation as they waited for the movie to start, but as soon as the lights dimmed a hush fell over the crowd and the title credits began to roll. With every crazy action seen and romantic kiss the campers would jump from their seats in excitement. The film was a great success.
Our next stop was mini golf. Even though it was one of the hottest days of the summer so far that did not deter these boys. After eating a hearty lunch, the campers paired off and began to play. Each village member played with great sportsmanship and generosity towards the others in their group. After everyone had finished a round of mini golf the village took a picture in front of the entrance way that said "welcome camp seneca lake." Once again we loaded the kids back onto the bus and we headed for the Ithaca commons where pizza was handed out and the campers were able to take a break an hang out for some free time.
The Ithaca commons is stocked with multiple interesting stores and activities. Campers were allowed to explore this area under counselor supervision. It was great to see them grin when they bought something cool in a store. From the Ithaca commons it was just a hop skip and a jump to the baseball diamonds that we spent an hour and a half play our favorite village league sport MNL. In a double header with the party boat pirates, the ropes course red soxs one both games. On the next field over the kitchen mets lost to the Waterfront Indians in an extremely close game.
After each team was finished the kids were surprised with ice cream from Purity Ice Cream Parlor. Cookie dough ice cream was a hot commodity that night. To close the night off we brought the campers back to a dive in movie with Seneca where they could party in the pool while enjoying the movie Grown Ups. Personally for me as a staff member it was one of the best Mohawk days I have ever been apart of a I have attended five Mohawk days in total. It was evident on the campers faces that while it took a lot out of them it was a day filled with great times and timeless memories.
