Pine Tree Post

Hello campers, parents, and friends of CSL!

Wow. Are there really less than two weeks until CSL 2014 begins? It feels like just yesterday that I was standing in the dining hall, cheering alongside our Tuscarora campers on the final morning of the August session. Together, we banged on the dining hall tables and clapped our hands, breaking out into one final senior campers are the best cheer. It was special, to say the least, but that point in time seemed to mark the end of my summer in Tuscarora and a return to the real world where I would be a junior at Syracuse University. Nonetheless, as I packed up my tent in Tusc and drove up Camp Road away from the campgrounds, my mind turned towards the summer of 2014. I knew I wanted to return, and while I loved my summer out in Tuscarora, I simply knew I had to return to the village I missed so dearly – Cayuga.

After a one year hiatus in 2013 away from the pine tree people, I will be returning this summer as the Cayuga Unit Head of 2014. To say that I am excited is most certainly an understatement. While I loved banging on the tables and cheering with the Tuscarorans last summer, I missed the passion on the Cayugans’ faces as they screamed their village’s cheers. I missed the intensity of the Cayuga Hockey League games, followed by the far more important sportsmanship among the boys. I missed the friendly games of roofball during rest hour and the constant moments of teaching from the oldest Cayugans to the youngest boys. After working in Cayuga for four summers from 2009 to 2012, this village has become synonymous with home for me.

Last Thursday, I headed up to Camp for the first time this summer. As I unpacked my car and organized my new tent, I couldn’t help but notice the overwhelming eeriness of being the first one in Cayuga. While there for three days, I experienced something in Cayuga that I had never experienced before – silence. Each time I exited my tent, I expected to see the boys running around the village, playing sports or merely enjoying the sunshine with some of their closest friends in the world. Cayuga felt empty without the campers that create the true magic of the village. In ten short days, however, this emptiness will be replaced by the pure bliss and energy of the Cayugans.

So wow. Camp is almost here, and your Cayuga staff could not be more excited. To all of the Cayugans coming in a few short days, we hope you are excited to have the summer of your lives! And to all the parents and friends of Cayuga, we hope you stay tuned on the blog for some incredible Cayuga content. Let the countdown begin!

Yours truly,
Alec Jacobson – Cayuga Unit Head
