Culinary arts and sciences had their first hobby session yesterday and it was quite the educational and exciting 2 hours.
The activity for the hobby session was pickling various fresh vegetables, and our 10 campers showed great willingness and enthusiasm when learning the skills involved. We divided up the carrots, cucumbers, peppers and onions among the campers, allowing them to peel and cut them into appropriate sizes for the pickle jars. There were also hard boiled eggs available to pickle. After the cutting, the campers were able to experiment by pouring various vinegars into jars; followed by a mixing and matching of different combinations of 10 spices.
The campers, along with the staff, enjoyed learning the steps of pickling as well as the freedom associated with experimentation. For example, cucumbers and carrots were places in one pickle jar containing white wine vinegar, nutmeg and rosemary. Once finished, the pickled vegetables were not yet ready for consumption. They must be boiled and then sit for 2 weeks. Then, we can enjoy our final products!
