Last Sunday, July 10th, the Oneidans left for the Adirondacks for our canoe / hiking trip. We drove 4 hours to Blue Mountain where we hiked several miles up a mountain to a beautiful site that overlooked all of the surrounding mountains. The view was amazing and well worth the 3 and a half hours it took to hike up and down it. That evening we camped out at Raquette Lake and enjoyed watching a stunning sunset from the beach.
Monday morning at 10 a.m the 16 campers and 4 staff set out to canoe 4 miles. It was all upstream and difficult, but a good challenge for us all. After the 4 miles we entered the 2 mile portage where we had to carry all our gear, food, and canoes. Once finishing that we had to canoe 3 more miles upstream to our campsite. We quickly set up our tents and then cooked a fantastic Mexican fiesta of rice, beans, salsa, peppes, onions, and corn. Although we are all worn out now, looking back it was a great bonding experience and the challenge helped us to grow both individually and as a group.
