Hi all,
Today we had our first hobby session and cartooning kicked off with a great start. The plan is for the kids to spend the next month working with Max and myself on an amazing animated short film. (Last year's masterpiece can be viewed on the camp website).
Today we started with a hugely imaginative brainstorming session, creating characters and constructing entire back-stories and personalities for them. We used several techniques to come up with new ideas. One involved thinking of an animal, and giving it a human job that it would not be suited for (e.g. a fire-fighting fish or dinosaur who works in an office). In order to give the characters a story, questions were posed to them in the form of an interview, particularly to find out what the characters want, and how they aim to achieve these goals.
The aim is to eventually settle on one character each and further develop them in the form of a comic strip. Each camper's character will feature in the final film, interacting with each other. The campers not only design them, but also devise the story-lines and lend their own voices to their character.
As well as 2D cut-out style used for the film, in future hobby periods we will explore other animation techniques, including stop-motion and hand-drawn flip-books, and will be also be looking into 3D computer animation. I look forward to continuing working on these projects and can't wait to see the final results!
