This summer will be my ninth summer here at camp. I started as a middle Cayugan, and have continued on returning to the place I call home. Last year I was a first time counselor. I had the privilege of spending that time in the village of Cayuga. It wasn't an easy task. Those boys have so much energy and enthusiasm it is incredible. Watching them play roofball during rest hour, mastering the diablo, and creating friendships that will follow them up through their camp life is the most rewarding thing I've ever done. I have the opportunity to help shape the lives of these young ones, yet they are also changing mine. They are teaching me life skills that will help me in my life beyond camp. I am going to be a freshman at the University of Michigan in the fall, and I am a little scared. Yet in the back of my mind I know that working in the village of Cayuga will prepare me for any obstacle that will come my way. Although I am the counselor for these third to sixth grade boys, these guys are the ones changing my life.
Well, it's almost here. Day one of staff orientation has finished. It's at the point where the only thing I can think of is the fact the camp seems empty without the kids. I want to be able to look out the door of my cabin and see kids having the times of their lives. In six days, this dream will become a reality. Can't wait to see all of you!
