As the Seneca Soccer League, Mohawk National League,
Onondaga Nuke ‘Em League, and Cayuga Hockey League each begin this week, stark
differences become apparent between these leagues and the leagues campers
participate in during the school year.
Camp Leagues are far superior to any league at home for five
reasons.
1. The coaches are relatable. The counselors live with the campers all day
and all night, and thereby understand what allows the campers to perform at
their best. Being coaches, the
counselors reason and joke with their athletes in order to push them to
succeed.
2. Patrons are supportive peers and passersby.
All of the onlookers just want to see a big hit or a nice catch and are not
rooting for or against a particular team.
3. The trophies mean
more. At the end of each session,
counselors tirelessly deliberate to award deserving campers a multitude of
trophies that acknowledge speed, performance, sportsmanship, leadership, and
many other skills. At the final banquet
the counselors present the trophies, which are authentic statues that usually
display the names of past winners as well.
4. The game’s hero can be anyone. Either an all-star athlete or a kid who
would never think of going out for the team can score the final goal. Since everyone is participating equally,
everyone has the chance to succeed.
5. The team grows together. Since all
teammates at camp are living with the rest of their team, the group has the
unique chance to develop a substantial relationship, which in turn enhances the
quality of the game. Being a part of a
team with such camaraderie is extremely important to all campers and truly improves
their time at camp.
