Tikkun Olam: Become (and Stay) a COW

Are you a COW?
You may be thinking, “No I am certainly not an animal that does nothing all day.” However that is not what I’m talking about. Some campers today were chosen to take place in an activity titled, “Become (and stay) a COW. I was able to interview senior camper Nate Grossman on the activity he was taking place in. When asked to describe the COW project he responded by saying this, “COW stands for citizen of the world, but it is much more than that. People who are citizens of the world live day to day; trying to help those around them, and those less fortunate.” I then asked Nate why he thinks it is important for people to embrace the COW way of life. He said, “Tikkun Olam means to repair the world. That is exactly what COWS do for the community and people across the world who they may never even meet.” The hope for us is that these COWS influence the rest of camp so that they won’t be citizens of the world for just the summer, but rather for the rest of their lives.

Rachel Rosenbaum explained the “become a Cow” program as one where the campers would come up with a fundraiser to help serve their community, whether it is a school or a sports team. The campers were to plan the fundraiser all the way through including location purpose, expenses, transportation and other logistical aspects. After the kids came up with a program they present it to one another and give each other constructive criticism.
