Cayuga's First Day

Dear Cayuga families,

Camp has most certainly gotten off to a great start! The first day has come and gone, and boy are we ready for this session to keep on going. My name is Alec Jacobson, and I am a C-1 counselor as well as Cayuga AUH. This is my tenth summer at CSL, and my second as a counselor. I, along with the rest of the Cayuga staff, am more than ready to make this summer the best one yet.

As the staff and counselors anxiously awaited the campers’ arrival near the office this morning, the anticipation and energy rose immensely. Then, as the big yellow buses raced down Camp Road, the camp atmosphere exploded. Counselors jumped in the air, campers sprinted into the arms of their friends, and not a soul stood alone. Mohawk counselors, dressed as pirates, had female counselors “walk the plank” on a wooden bench, while the Cayugan staff blew their whistles loudly in their business casual outfits. This truly was an opening unlike any other, and the Cayugans certainly knew they had entered somewhere special.

After a delicious lunch and various orientations around camp, the Cayugans finally got a chance to settle down and unpack. Clothes flew out of trunks and duffel bags until they reached the labeled cubby areas, and counselors slowly helped their campers make beds. Before the sun went down, the campers had finally given their cabins a sense of home.

Dinner came and went, bringing about a Cayuga Hockey League village night. Campers laughed as they ran the forty yard dash, and shouted out with their fellow peers as they competed in the 3 on 3 drill. After a brief camper interview session, the CHL tryout session had come to a close.

The last event of the day featured a procession at the waterfront fire circle. As campers circled up on the fire circle benches, counselors huddled at the infirmary and finalized all costumes and dances. After walking down Infirmary Hill, counselors began their skits and introduced their villages and specialty areas to the counselors. “Oohs” and “ahs” came by the dozen, until the inevitable dance party came about. The sun set, however, and with that came a return to villages for the Cayugans. Bed time awaited them, but not for long, as another 27 days are still yet to come. We are incredibly excited for the week ahead!
