Over intercession I received a call from Alec Jacobson and Corey Ansell. They had just finished a meeting with the staff and programming director. Omeed, Cameron, Jake and I huddled around the speaker phone as they explained we would be making a change in the league. We will now play Football for the August Session instead of Hockey. This sparked many conversations for the rest of intercession regarding rules, how the league would be formatted, and how the kids would react to this switch. After a couple days of discussing, it was decided, the Cayuga Football League was born.
Arriving to camp, I was informed that I would be the first commissioner of CFL since we had the league in August 1999. I am honored to be given this opportunity and am extremely excited to take part in our first full league games on Thursday.
The CFL Combine went amazingly. It may have ran smoother than any CHL Tryouts we have ever ran. We had 5 stations. The first was campers were given the task to stop a pass play between two staff members. The second was route running where a staff member would tell them a route to run and the camper would run the route and get passed to. The third station was a Hail Mary pass the camper would have to try and catch. The fourth was a vertical test where they were given a post it note and would see how high they could jump by posting it on the tree. The final station was a 40 Meter dash where they could compare speeds from one another.
After the stations, the campers were interviewed by each set of coaches. We then ended the combine with more passing drills with the staff.
It was extremely successful because all of the campers felt confident they could play a CFL season after the practice they went through. All together, it was a fun and exciting way to start off their August Session.
The teams are made, the coaches are ready, and the first CFL period will be Thursday. I recommend looking at the photos I posted on Instagram from the combine to give yourself a better idea of what was going down.
Long live CFL,
