Mohican Tradition (July 9th)

Mohawk is a very special place for a multitude of reasons. Though brotherhood and spirit are both integral parts of the village, tradition is what keeps Mohicans coming back year after year. The Mohican tradition comes from things like the annual fire ceremony, the basketball marathon, and even just playing euchre in the village.

What really draws me to Mohawk is its inhabitants' ability to keep up traditions that are decades old. The basketball marathon had been on a 26 year hiatus until seven years ago, when the unit head at the time brought it back. In the spirit of this week's Shabbat theme, it is commitments like this, the never-ending MNL rivalries, and the daily cheering routines that keep Mohawk's traditions alive.

I am proud to be a part of a place in which tradition never dies. Mohican campers today still sleep in the same cabins that their fathers slept in, and write their names on the same walls their uncles did. The simple traditions like this ensure that Mohawk will always be one of the most significant times in a camper's life.
