As the session comes to a close, so do our hobbies. Over the years, the hobby program at Camp Seneca Lake has evolved into a program that effectively creates curriculums for campers in their specialty of choice. As an O-1 counselor, I get to hear stories about a variety of interesting hobbies that have engaged, challenged, and inspired my campers continuously throughout the session.

After hours and hours of time with hobbies, campers and staff culminated with performances, art shows, cooking competitions, and swimming across the lake, among the many culmination activities. The most incredible part of the evening came when one of my O-1 campers confidently marched onto the stage and performed a mash up with her glee club. Not only did my eight year old camper perform in front of the entire camp, she was the loudest and proudest performer up on that stage. I could not take my eyes off of my tiny dancer singing her heart out to all of camp.

The best part of hobbies at Camp Seneca Lake is, not only that campers can develop and improve upon a skill pertaining to a specific interest, but also that it is clear that campers develop a sense of pride, confidence, and self worth in knowing that if they want to do something and get after it, then they can and most certainly will achieve a goal. Hobbies give campers tangible skills they can take home with them, but along with these tangible skills are the intangible skills that are a trademark of the Camp Seneca Lake experience.
