Last summer marked the first annual Mohawk Games, a
session-long program that is modeled after the New York Times Bestseller series
The Hunger Games. If you know
anything about The Hunger Games,
“tributes” fight to the death in an arena that only one person comes out alive.
No, us Mohicans do not fight to the death in the O-field (unless you count
MNL). However, last year, we instituted this program as a way for Mohicans to
exercise a little friendly competition amongst each other. Every camper, or “tribute”,
is paired with a sponsor (AKA a Mohawk staff member) who helps him through
various challenges.
The inaugural Mohawk Games turned out to be a great success!
The program began with a dramatic opening ceremony at the fire circle, where
sponsors announced the tributes they would be assisting. The events that
followed were a set of grueling challenges that tested the tributes wit,
creativity, intelligence, strength, and endurance. In the Spelling Bee, some
tributes excelled while others needed some assistance from their sponsor. The
Super Market Sweep showed the staff how well the tributes could work together
to complete a gruesome blindfolded task. There was also a Knock-Out Basketball
Challenge, but what the whole camp really raved about was the Cornucopia.
Modeled after an actual scene in the book, the Cornucopia is a live-action-role-play
event in which campers got to defend themselves with pool noodles. The Games wrapped
up with a long string of challenges that let tributes travel around camp while testing
their intellect, concentration, and surely their
endurance. In the end, one tribute came out of the Games the most successful
(shout out to Etan), but every camper seemed to have a great time!
So what will the Mohawk Games bring the village of Mohawk
this July? There are rumors of a new and improved Cornucopia and several events
that were not even attempted last year. Personally, I cannot wait for the
M-Games to begin. All I can tell you is this: Mohicans, prepare to be blown
away by bigger and better events. Prepare yourself tributes. You will be put
into scenarios you could only dream of. The one question on everyone’s mind
is…who will come out victorious?
