From the Associate Program Director

Hey CSL!

My name is Rachel Rosenbaum and I will be one of the Associate Programming Directors this summer. One of my main jobs will be to provide creative assistance on all programs. As someone who loves to plan, loves being creative, and most of all, loves camp, I am thrilled to play this role. After being a counselor in both Seneca and Tuscarora, this summer will be my first in the programming office. I am so excited to have a hand in planning programs that will impact campers and staff alike. Not having campers of my own will definitely take some getting used to, but I’m so excited to have the opportunity to get to know a more diverse group of campers and interact with them on a daily basis.

One of my favorite parts about camp is how distinct one summer is from the next. You would think that after eleven summers, some aspects of camp might get a little repetitive.  But they don’t; and that is why so many campers return as staff and continue to come back year after year. The best part is, despite how unique the summer, I always leave with the same indescribable love for CSL.

This past semester I was abroad in Australia for five months. The experience impacted me more than I could have ever imagined. I had the opportunity to travel with 21 other American students, up and down the East coast of Australia,  all the way to Tasmania, and form bonds with a few Australian families. The first night there we were caught camping in a massive cyclone and were stuck inside a one-room building for about two days. This may sound pretty dreadful, but in fact, it is one of my fondest memories. It was during this time, when someone suggested a game of charades, that we realized how many of us were “camp people,” with hundreds of ice breakers up our sleeves. Of the group, about eight of us had attended sleep away camp since we were young and more had worked as staff. After hours of camp games and icebreakers, you can imagine the relief I felt at spending the next five months with this group of people. It’s amazing how the simple understanding of what Camp really means can create comfort 15,000 miles away.
