"What Makes Us Cayuga..."

Hello CSL Parents and Families,

Cayuga has won Fight Song 2012! Last night was truly a special one for everyone at Camp Seneca Lake. Each village performed a Fight Song that exceeded all possible expectations. Fight Song 2012 was a huge success for every camper and staff.

What I love about Fight Song is that all villages are competing for one common goal…to win! However, my definition of winning is not what typical people believe it to be. John Wooden, a hall of fame basketball coach, said, “true success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” This could not be truer regarding Fight Song at Camp Seneca Lake.

In Cayuga, we preached hard work, dedication, effort, participation, cooperation, patience, and stepping out of comfort zones among many other things.  All of this brought us closer together as campers and staff within Cayuga. We bonded over Fight Song throughout the first three weeks of July, letting us now appreciate each others company even more so for the final week of the session.

Each and every Cayugan worked so hard, and put everything they had into preparing for Fight Song. The staff in the village had put in countless hours and hours of time prepping it for the campers. All of this hard work and effort came down to one final moment, in the O-Rec, on July 22 at 8:35pm. Cayugans lined up in the back of the O-Rec. The rest is now history…

Walking in with pride and emotion, Cayuga sang “Cayuga” over and over again to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner. Once on stage, we roared into the crowd with our version of “What Makes You Beautiful.” To the amazement of the audience, we marched out to the tune of “Lion Sleeps Tonight” with Cayuga chanting their own version of the song.

Everyone in the audience had their eyes glued to the stage throughout the Cayuga Fight Song. As we marched out, the entire crowd went wild. Chills went down my body and I could not wait to begin cheering and celebrating with the village. We knew at this point that we had successfully performed Fight Song. We put in so much effort and hard work up to this moment, that our final performance was flawless. Regardless of hoisting the trophy, we were winners. We did everything we were expected to, and more. We did everything we were possibly capable of doing, and more. We did Fight Song the Cayuga way!

As Ari Baum, Program Director, commenced the evening on stage with his closing speech, Cayuga sat patiently waiting for the judge’s decision. Seconds felt like minutes, and minutes felt like hours. We knew that we were already winners by the way we gave it our all. However, the announcement of who would hoist the trophy would only add to the excitement.

“And the winner of Fight Song 2012…CAYUGA!”

I fell to the floor; I was speechless. Campers went wild, staff went crazy, and I sat there in awe. Our boys, from the mighty village of Cayuga, pulled it off. We were announced winners of Fight Song 2012. As I hugged and cheered with every Cayugan, it hit me. The Cayuga swagger is back. We are Cayuga, and every camper is sure proud of it. The boys went all out in celebrating and could not contain their excitement. It was the most proud moment of my entire sixteen years at Camp Seneca Lake. I could not have asked of anything more from my counselors or campers. They were truly winners, but not because of the score. Every camper and staff member prepared so hard for the final performance. They all took it seriously and had a great time. Getting the high score was just a bonus.

The real winner of Fight Song 2012 was Camp Seneca Lake. All five villages could have easily won the trophy. Each performance was fabulous and through the roof. I feel bad for the judges because it was extremely tough to be in their position. Fight Song brings out the best in people, from youngest campers to oldest campers to staff. Villages bonded together and had a great time doing so.  The programming staff orchestrated a perfect program. They achieved their goals and Fight Song 2012 is now one for the history books.

I am proud to be the Cayuga Unit Head after a moment like last night. Each camper was ecstatic and filled with pride. It was a night to remember for CSL!

Take a look at our main Fight Song lyrics (to the tune of “What Makes You Beautiful”):

We’re immature and that’s for sure
We’ve got it all from C-1 to C-4-or-or
C-c-come on, you think we’re wrong
To prove we’re right, we’ll show you with fight so-o-ong
With Max by our side and Cayugan spirit
The brotherly cubs of the u-uge

Cayuga fights ‘til the end even though we’re small
We bring the fun no regrets and we do it all
From CHL, Tiyulim, to the Dining Hall
We will run the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Rhythm, the jazz, and all that stuff
Just like canteen the whole camp cannot get enough
Right now you’re looking at us and you won’t believe
That we’ll run the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Not big-O, we’re the boys of Cayuga

Hey Seneca, you nervous yet?
We all know Cayuga is a threat
Village of pine, in bed by 9
We are the cutest village you will find
Let’s raise the roof and play some roofball
Cayuga’s here to say

Cayuga fights ‘til the end even though we’re small
We bring the fun no regrets and we do it all
From CHL, Tiyulim, to the Dining Hall
We will run the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Rhythm, the jazz, and all that stuff
Just like canteen the whole camp cannot get enough

Right now you’re looking at us and you won’t believe
That we’ll run the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Not big-O, we’re the boys of Cayuga

La la la la la la la Cayuga
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la Cayuga
La la la la la la

Cayuga fights ‘til the end even though we’re small
From the Pool to Agam we just love it all
And even though we are growing we still can say

We will run the show

That’s what makes us

Cayuga fights ‘til the end even though we’re small
We bring the fun no regrets and we do it all
From CHL, Tiyulim, to the Dining Hall
We will run the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Mohawk, their tough, but they’re just not us
Because we light up the spectrum like no one else
And in the end Lisa, Rachel, and Sham can say
That we ran the show (ugh!)
We’re the boys of Cayuga
Not big-O, we’re the boys of Cayuga
Not big-O, we’re the boys of Cayuga

Proudly,
Max Krieger
Cayuga Unit Head
