Oneida Perspective

Thursday night I experienced something I have never experienced before in my 8 years at camp. In the past, the first all camp program (ACP) of the session has been a little rocky and sometimes not too exciting for the campers. However, the first ACP of the 2011 July session was incredible. What we did was get assigned to random groups by our counselors, consisting of campers of all villages and in these groups we walked to different areas of camp where we learned a certain dance move at each station. This gave all of the new campers a chance to meet new people and actually get a tour of camp while doing something fun. In the end, all of camp came together at the basketball courts and performed a flash mob dance. Now, it may sound kind of uneventful but this program really made me excited and prepared for the rest of the session. As an LIT, I was the oldest camper in my group for this program. I feel as though this was a helpful start to my leadership training this summer because I really focused on stepping out of my comfort zone and chatting with all of the younger campers in my dance group. I wanted them to feel like they could rely on me to help them learn and perfect their dance moves as well as look up to me as a positive role model and leader. I am very excited to continue learning new skills throughout this summer in order to achieve my goal of becoming a leader who has the ability to have a strong and positive impact on others.
