IT'S CAYUGA DAY!!!
This morning the Cayuga staff woke up our campers with a surprise-it was Cayuga day, the special day in each session where the village abandons normal periods in favor of unique, out of camp activities for the whole day. After waking the campers up, we organized a village breakfast complete with bagels, cream cheese, and some priceless frosted flakes. Even though it was so early in the morning, the village was already buzzing with anticipation for what the day might bring.
From breakfast, we started off the day's schedule with a slip 'n'' slide behind the pool. After thoroughly drenching each camper, we headed back to the village to grab dry clothes and bags, and then proceeded to board a bus by the flagpole.
The first out of camp destination for the day was a local berry farm, where we picked blueberries and raspberries, then had a pizza lunch in the field. Back on the buses we went, to the Finger Lakes race track where we got a tour of the horse adoption center and saw a few live horse races. The campers petted horses and got to see the jockeys and horses up close.
From the race track we drove back to camp through a torrential downpour while singing the Cayuga fight song and cheers. Back at camp we walked down to the o-rec, where we had a mobile roller disco company waiting with roller blades and music for the campers. The next two hours were spent rollerblading, dancing, and eating quesadillas cooked out over charcoal by the staff. Every camper got to roller blade, and every camper had a blast racing around the o-rec on wheels. The day ended with an ice cream party in the dining hall, with the berries from earlier as toppings.
What a day it was. The vibe in Cayuga is starting to intensify as the session passes the halfway point. It seems like the campers realize just how little time they have at CSL. Even as a staff member I can't help but feel anxious as I try to cram as much fun into each hour and each day I have left at this camp. I constantly ask myself what could have possible convinced me to take last summer off after being a camper for the previous seven.
It's the beginning of the end for the July session, but we are still experiencing the raw energy and emotion that makes our campers here in Cayuga the best around.
