New session, new campers, new programs. At the beginning of 2nd session, I had expected to have many déjà vues, as the first day is often overwhelming with not much time for substantial bonding (besides silly name games). I understood that 2nd session is much different, but the idea of greeting the campers in a similar way, unpacking, having an afternoon of swim tests, lice checks, etc., seemed like a repetitive (although important!) first day. As you may have deduced, I was wrong. Déjà vu is far from what I experienced. Just as the 1st session campers had done, the 2nd session campers ran off the buses and danced in the dining hall with excitement and enthusiasm, but something was different. Not a bad different, just different. These kids have unique personalities, talents, interests, and perspectives just as the 1st session campers had. The special mix of personalities for each session and each summer makes for a completely unique and special experience that will never be repeated. As per usual camp culture, tradition and norms remain and thrive, but it's all in the ever changing details that keeps staff and campers wanting more summer after summer.
