Wearing socks and sneakers to dinner, all the campers at CSL wondered what the evening activity would hold. After the meal, everyone went to the O-rec where the Program Director, Ari Baum, told everyone that it was the beginning of Tikkun Olam day. He proceeded to tell the staff and campers that ever single person in camp would have the opportunity to donate to a charity of their choice. The charity options included: SPCA, the Jewish National Fund, UNICEF, and Milly's Pantry- a local food pantry in Penn Yan. With the chance to choose their own charity, campers and staff were able to choose which causes are most important to them. Each village ran laps of different lengths (based upon age) around camp and each route was worth a different amount of pennies. The slogan for the night was "One penny is worth more than none!" The amount of effort that campers and staff contributed to this event directly translated to the amount of money they were able to raise for the charities. This encouraged everyone to try their hardest to raise as much money as possible. The camp as a whole raised 20,000 pennies in less than one hour, and anonymous donors are continuing to match this number, adding even more to CSL's donations.
Working together as one on the day of Tikkun Olam.
